Dear Friends,
It goes without saying that this year has been a challenging one. The circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 epidemic and the devastation caused by multiple hurricanes have produced a great deal of pain and suffering throughout our great state and throughout the disability community.
During these troubling times, I could not be more proud of the steadfast commitment of this organization and its staff who continue to protect, advocate and empower people with disabilities and seniors, including those most affected by this year’s circumstances.
Over the past several months, Disability Rights Louisiana (DRLA) has worked collaboratively with representatives from the Governor’s office, leadership at the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that people with disabilities and seniors are provided the resources necessary to remain as safe as possible during these unsettling times.
While feelings of isolation consume many people with disabilities, especially the elderly and those residing in congregate settings, our staff has developed creative ways to meet with these individuals while still protecting them from health related issues, including by phone, through virtual visits and with drive-by visits.
Additionally, over this past year the organization has made significant developments aimed at increasing our communication with those we serve, including transitioning our name from “Advocacy Center” to “Disability Rights Louisiana” (DRLA), launching a new and improved website, and establishing new social media platforms.
As we move into 2021, we know that many of the challenges that we currently face will still exist and that our work continues. We humbly ask that during this holiday season you consider supporting our efforts by making a financial contribution to DRLA so that we may continue our work on behalf of people with disabilities and seniors here in Louisiana.
