Client FC* is a 16-year old child who is diagnosed with mental health issues. When we met FC, his high school was trying to expel him for behaviors associated with his disability. Disability Rights Louisiana intervened for FC and explained that the school had not been following FC’s education plan when he started school this year which can make behaviors worse.
Instead of expelling FC, the school cancelled his disciplinary hearing. The school also held a meeting to ensure that all of FC’s educators and school staff followed his individual education plan to start providing support services that they are obligated to provide to FC under Federal law so that he has access to appropriate education. FC is supposed to receive interventions under federal law that help him learn while in school.
When we first met with FC, he was trying to successfully integrate into a new high school setting but none of the provisions that help him learn were given. The new school simply did not follow his individual education plan. This lead to a physical altercation. Disability Rights Louisiana stepped in and negotiated a meeting with the school to ensure that FC would start receiving the interventions in his education plan and to ensure that he was not punished because the school did not do their job.
