Disability Rights Louisiana is happy to announce that earlier this month, Ashley Volion, who has been a Policy Assistant with DRLA since 2015, completed her PhD in Disability Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She had previously earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees from University of New Orleans, and has lived in New Orleans since moving from her hometown of Lafitte, LA in 2007.

Since coming onboard to Disability Rights Louisiana in 2015 (then the Advocacy Center), Dr. Volion has been actively involved in promoting voting rights for people with disabilities, including several presentations she has given to various disability related agencies throughout the state.

In addition to her work at DRLA, Dr. Volion has taught several classes on subjects including disability as it relates to race, class, and gender, and disabilities as they are presented in American film. She has a strong passion for building community with people with disabilities, which she continues to bring to her work and her everyday life.
