On Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021 many voters across Louisiana, including Orleans Parish, District 16 (includes Bastrop and Monroe region), District 102 (includes Algiers and the Westbank) and District 27 (includes the Lake Charles metro area) will be participating in primary elections for several offices, along with ballot measures and recalls.
On election day, Disability Rights Louisiana (DRLA) will offer a voter hotline to answer questions related to voting with a disability. Our staff attorneys and advocates will be on hand from the time polls open at 7:00am until closing time at 8:00pm to answer your questions about voting and polling place accessibility issues.
In accordance with the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002, voters with disabilities are entitled to accommodations that give them the same level of accessibility to polling places and voting machines as voters without disabilities.
Louisiana requires that all polling places be accessible in the following manner:
A. The doors should be wide enough for a wheelchair;
B. There should be ramps or elevators if there are steps; and
C. There must be reserved accessible parking and all walkways must be accessible and free of obstacles.
If a polling place is not accessible, voters can notify a commissioner at the polling place or call their parish Clerk of Court’s Office so that they can correct the accessibility problem immediately on election day. They may also contact the Secretary of State’s Office toll-free at 800.883.2805.
Voters in Louisiana who need help with a polling place accessibility issue, or have any other questions related to voting with a disability can call us at our toll-free number: 1-800-960-7705.
