As we work to expand our efforts to protect, advocate for, and empower people with disabilities throughout Louisiana, we are excited to report that effective June 2, 2020, our Executive Director, Christopher Rodriguez, has been appointed to the Governor’s Advisory Council on Disability Affairs. This is Mr. Rodriguez’s second gubernatorial appointment since taking on the position of Executive Director in September of 2018, he also serves on the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council. This latest appointment marks another promising step in our partnership with Governor Edwards to work together to address the needs of people with disabilities statewide.
The Governor’s Advisory Council on Disability Affairs (GACDA), “was established to monitor state compliance with the Americans with Disability Act and to advise the governor on the needs of individuals with disabilities in Louisiana. GACDA is also charged with assisting the Governor’s Office of Disability Affairs (GODA) with the resolution of state disabilities issues and provide education, communication, and networking services concerning disability issues and needs for all Louisiana citizens. GACDA is composed of 31 members appointed by Governor Edwards.” (from their website)
GACDA falls under the umbrella of The Governor’s Office on Disability Affairs, which serves as an informational resource for people with disabilities, their families, and the people who serve them. The council will hold quarterly meetings to discuss issues ranging from legislation, education, housing, employment, and accessibility as they relate to people with disabilities. We are thrilled to have a seat at the table and build on our productive relationship moving into the future as we work to ensure the rights of people with disabilities so that they may have an opportunity to participate in all aspects of life.
