Client BJ* is a five-year old, non-verbal child diagnosed with Autism. He is a student who has difficult transportation needs due to his disabilities and must be watched very closely to prevent self-harm.
Under Federal law, he is entitled to transportation to and from school as a part of his free appropriate public education. When we first met, his mother told us that she has been driving him to and from school, over forty miles per day, for three years. She had to drive BJ because his school was not providing safe transportation. Disability Rights Louisiana successfully negotiated reimbursement to his mother for three years of transportation costs to and from school for over $8,000.00.
