One day before RF turned 18, her mother obtained a continuing tutorship over her, without RF having notice, representation or an opportunity to be heard in that proceeding. Shortly thereafter, RF’s mother took her out of high school, placed her in a group home against her will, and prevented RF from having contact with her father.
After filing a constitutional challenge to Louisiana’s continuing tutorship statute, and obtaining a temporary restraining order against RF’s mother, Amitai Heller and Laura Reeds convinced RF’s mother to agree to a joint motion annulling the tutorship. RF was able to leave the group home and move in with her father. She now has freedom of movement, control over her finances and medical care, and can pursue her goals of training to work with animals or in the culinary field.
