Disability Rights Louisiana was contacted by the grandmother of a 12-year-old who uses a G-Tube for feeding. The student is non-verbal and is hard of hearing. The school insisted that school staff practice removing and inserting the G-Tube on the student, to demonstrate they knew how to use it. The grandmother objected to staff practicing on the student. A DRLA attorney represented the student at two IEP meetings. As a result, the district eliminated training directly on the student, and agreed to train a second staff member so that the grandmother did not have to accompany the student on field trips. The school also began providing an iPad with appropriate programs to assist the student in communicating.
