A 22-year-old was placed in a group home by his parents due to his misbehavior at home. He was very high functioning and while in the group home was able to convince other residents to purchase things for him in exchange for friendship. Due to his behavior he found himself in a behavior hospital after a self-inflicted stabbing. He was to be discharged from hospital but the family was not going to have him return to the group home but also did not want him at home. The CLOP Ombudsman spent over 6 hours educating both parents about the DD service system and related matters.
The CLOP Ombudsman knew he would only get a waiver offer if he still lived in a group home. They worked with the provider to give him as long as possible before discharge. The Ombudsman requested an expedited SUN assessment and his discharge date was extended to August 1. He had the SUN assessment and will get his waiver, resulting in his being released from unnecessary institutionalization.
