[NEW ORLEANS, LA – June 28, 2022] – Michael Bachemin, an individual with severe intellectual disability and autism, suffered second and third degree burns over 18% of his body while under the care of the Bessemer Group Home and has filed a lawsuit in Federal Court against the owners of the home, DDMS of Louisiana. Mr. Bachemin was placed in the care of the Bessemer Group Home because he is unable to care for himself and is unable to meaningfully communicate his needs in a consistent manner. Instead of having his needs met by the Bessemer Group Home, he alleges that he was neglected and suffered severe burns that required surgery.
Despite the horrific injuries suffered by Mr. Bachemin, DDMS of Louisiana has not informed Mr. Bachemin’s family how or why he suffered these extensive burns. DDMS has offered no explanations or apologies, nor have they made any offers to pay for Mr. Bachemin’s surgery or other treatment associated with the severe burns.
Because of these failures, Mr. Bachemin’s family have turned to Disability Rights Louisiana and the law firm of Bizer & DeReus to file a lawsuit in Federal Court. The Complaint is attached. Pre-suit investigation revealed that the Bessemer Group Home had written policies with respect to water temperatures within the home, but the employees at the home were unaware of these policies and wholly failed to comply with them. It is important to Mr. Bachemin’s family that they find out what happened to Mr. Bachemin so that no other resident of the home suffers a similar fate.
Attorney Andrew Bizer of Bizer & DeReus, commented, “Mr. Bachemin’s family placed Michael at the Bessemer Group Home because they believed the staff there would take care of him. Michael cannot care for himself. Instead of taking responsibility for the severe burns that occurred under their watch, the Bessemer Group Home has not told his family what happened nor have they even apologized for his injuries. This lawsuit will get justice for Michael and answers for his family.”
